Little Green Lake Adaptive Management Committee Meeting

July 30, 2011

The meeting was to check the status of the lake based on the Aquatic Plant Management Plan and the status of treatment this summer.  Committee members discussed the fact that CLP was very late in coming in though treatment appears to be successful.

CLP beds were outside of the treatment permitted area.

Sego Pondweed is appearing where denser stands of Elodea and Coontail were found.

Members noted some of the continuing problem areas where excessive mats of Milfoil

persist.  A permit for additional EWM treatment was denied.  There is discussion of whether the permit allows for some discretion near the approved lanes of treatment when the lanes in the permit appear to not need the level of treatment prescribed.  Such discretion might result in dealing with the “problem” areas that limit navigation and that if addressed would enhance the fishery.  Any minor deviation can be documented for the water quality manager noting that actions are within the scope of the permit area.  Also, in any actions, the committee recognizes that treatment needs to be consistent with the goals agreed to in the APMP.

Mike noted that there had been 9 loads harvested to date compared to 160 at this time last year.   June 30 – July 1 is an ideal time for DNR to assess post treatment results.  The schedule for follow up has varied in recent years limiting the ability of the LGL Rehab. District to do follow up treatment to make corrections.  Natives are more susceptible if re-treatment occurs much later than June to early July.

Doug is looking at Lake Quality Citizen Monitoring Data collected from 1986 until approx. 2003.  He is noting trends relative to large weather events which will be of interest to all on the workgroup.  Large runoff events tend to negatively affect agriculture sediment basins pushing non point sources of pollution toward the lake.  The basins or other practices are sized for smaller storms and therefore can’t handle the additional flows.  This might be a discussion for a future meeting.

Committee Recommendations:

* Adaptive Management Committee should continue to monitor the aquatic weed, algae, and water conditions.

* Request the DNR treatment permit be expanded for CLP control for 2012 based on our contracted Aquatic Specialist 2011 GPS locations.

* Contract Aaron to develop "Lake Management Plan", which includes our updated APMP, and shows the District's aggressiveness in controlling factors

  external to the lake.
